Anti-Ableism Training

Ableism - oppression based on disability - is present in all of our society and impacts everyone - not just people with disabilities and their families. (One definition of ableism we love is from TL Lewis - here). The work of anti-ableism - of dismantling oppression based on disability - is important for all of us.

From the start of STP, we were committed to building an understanding of ableism in siblings of disabled people. With help from our friends, we collectively grew our knowledge, and created a training specifically for siblings (but we think other family members and others benefit from it too). We’ve run this training live with groups of siblings, families, coaches, therapists, organizers, and advocates, and because we want to get this training to even more people, we developed an asynchronous online version of it.

Now, from whenever and wherever you are, you can login for free to this platform and get anti-ableism training in bite-sized chunks. We’ve included a reflection guide and additional references to support your continued learning.

You will have to create an account on Podia, the training platform - but the training is free and you can come back to it as many time as you want to.

From those who have attended a training:

  • “The trainers were fantastic, and I was shocked at how little exposure I had previously had to the topic. This training was life-changing.”

  • “It opened my eyes to how much ableism I participate in and perpetuate daily and inspired me to incorporate this content as soon as possible.”

  • “Your training was such a gift! Our staff are really soaking in the information.”
